Pineal gland
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008974
A small endocrine gland located in the epithalamus, near the center of the brain. Its principal function is the production and secretion of melatonin, a hormone derived from serotonin that modulates sleep patterns and circadian rhythms. The gland's activity is regulated by light detected by the retina, with melatonin production increasing in darkness and decreasing in light.
