Inoculation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005887
The introduction of microorganisms, such as bacteria or yeast, into a culture medium to initiate their growth and proliferation. In biotechnology, this is the step of adding a small volume of a starter culture, the inoculum, to a sterile fermentation vessel to begin a production process. The size of the inoculum is calculated to achieve a desired initial cell density for optimal growth.
