Apical
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000731
Describing a position in a trigonal bipyramidal molecular geometry that lies along the axis perpendicular to the equatorial plane. Substituents in these positions are typically 180 degrees apart from each other and 90 degrees from the equatorial substituents. In phosphorus pentachloride (PCl5), the two chlorine atoms along the main axis are apical.
