Steric isotope effect

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011395

A change in the equilibrium constant or rate of a reaction when an atom is replaced by one of its isotopes, where the change is primarily due to differences in the effective size of the isotopes. This effect is typically small and arises from changes in vibrational amplitudes, which affect the average internuclear distances. It is a type of secondary isotope effect.
