Inverse isotope effect
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006049
A phenomenon where a reaction involving a heavier isotope proceeds faster than the same reaction involving a lighter isotope. This is contrary to the more common normal isotope effect, where reactions with lighter isotopes are faster due to lower zero-point energies. It typically arises when the force constants of the bonds involved in the rate-determining step change in a specific way upon isotopic substitution.
