Heavy atom isotope effect
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005151
A kinetic isotope effect observed when an atom heavier than hydrogen is substituted with one of its isotopes, leading to a change in reaction rate. This effect is typically smaller than primary hydrogen kinetic isotope effects but can still provide insights into the transition state structure. It arises from changes in vibrational frequencies due to the mass difference between isotopes.
