Isotopes

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006238

Atoms of the same chemical element that have the same number of protons (atomic number) but differ in the number of neutrons, and therefore have different mass numbers. While isotopes of an element exhibit nearly identical chemical properties, their physical properties, such as mass and nuclear stability, can vary significantly. For example, hydrogen has three common isotopes: protium, deuterium, and tritium.
