Deuteriation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013033
The process of replacing one or more hydrogen atoms in a molecule with deuterium atoms, which are isotopes of hydrogen containing one proton and one neutron. This isotopic labeling technique is widely used in spectroscopy, reaction mechanism studies, and mass spectrometry. Deuteriation can alter the vibrational frequencies and mass of a molecule.
