Hydrogen/deuterium exchange

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005472

A method in mass spectrometry where labile hydrogen atoms in a molecule are replaced by deuterium atoms. This exchange is typically performed by exposing the sample to a deuterated solvent or atmosphere. The mass increase due to deuterium incorporation provides information about the number of exchangeable protons and the solvent accessibility of different parts of the molecule.
