Isotope exchange

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006234

A chemical reaction in which an atom in a chemical entity is replaced by an isotope of the same element from a different chemical entity. The process results in no net chemical change but alters the isotopic composition of the involved species. Isotope exchange reactions are used to study reaction mechanisms and molecular dynamics, for example, by tracking the incorporation of deuterium from a solvent into an organic molecule.
