Intramolecular isotope effect
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006016
A kinetic isotope effect seen when one substrate molecule holds isotopic atoms in equivalent reactive positions, such as the H and D of a CHD group, so that the isotopes compete inside the same molecule. It appears as a non-statistical ratio of isotopomeric products, favoring the route on which the isotopic atom is bonded more loosely in the transition state. Because both paths share one molecule, it is measured by product analysis and avoids the errors of comparing separate substrates.
