Parasympathomimetic
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008461
A substance that mimics the effects of stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system. These agents act either directly by binding to and activating muscarinic or nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, or indirectly by inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, thereby increasing acetylcholine levels. Pilocarpine is an example of a direct-acting parasympathomimetic used to treat glaucoma.
