Autonomic nervous system

The division of the peripheral nervous system that regulates involuntary bodily functions, such as heart rate, digestion, respiration, and glandular secretions. It operates largely unconsciously and is subdivided into the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Neurotransmitters like acetylcholine and norepinephrine mediate its effects on target organs.
