Butyrylcholinesterase

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001551

An enzyme found in plasma, liver, and other tissues that hydrolyzes choline esters, including acetylcholine, though less efficiently than acetylcholinesterase. It serves as a scavenger enzyme, detoxifying certain organophosphate compounds and carbamates. Its activity can be measured in blood plasma as a biomarker for exposure to some neurotoxic agents.
