Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001550

A primary lymphoid organ found only in birds, located as a dorsal diverticulum of the cloaca. It is the site where B lymphocytes mature and differentiate before migrating to secondary lymphoid tissues to participate in the humoral immune response. The functional equivalent for B cell maturation in mammals is the bone marrow, as mammals do not possess this organ.
