Cholinesterase inhibitor

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002020

A substance that blocks the action of cholinesterase enzymes, which are responsible for breaking down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. By preventing acetylcholine degradation, these inhibitors increase its concentration and prolong its effects at synapses. They are used therapeutically to treat conditions like Alzheimer's disease and myasthenia gravis, but can also be potent toxins.
