Paraoxonase
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008455
An enzyme, specifically an aryldialkylphosphatase, that hydrolyzes organophosphates, including the toxic metabolite paraoxon derived from the insecticide parathion. This enzyme is present in the liver and plasma and contributes to the detoxification of certain organophosphate compounds by breaking them down before they can inhibit acetylcholinesterase. Human populations exhibit genetic polymorphisms in the PON1 gene, which encodes paraoxonase, leading to variations in enzyme activity and susceptibility to organophosphate toxicity.
