Biomarker of effect

A measurable alteration in a biological system that indicates a response to exposure to an external agent, such as a chemical or pollutant. This alteration reflects a change from the organism's normal physiological state. Examples include enzyme induction, DNA adduct formation, or changes in hormone levels following exposure to a toxic substance.
