Nerve conduction study

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007831

A test of peripheral nerve function in which a nerve is stimulated with a brief electrical pulse and the response is picked up by surface electrodes, giving the speed at which the signal travels along the nerve and the size of the response. Slowed conduction or a reduced response points to damage to the nerve or its insulating myelin sheath, as in carpal tunnel syndrome or Guillain-Barré syndrome. Conduction velocities in the major nerves of healthy arms exceed about 50 meters per second.
