Saccharides

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013517

Carbohydrates in the broad sense, covering monosaccharides, disaccharides, oligosaccharides and polysaccharides, whose units are joined by glycosidic bonds. Monosaccharides are polyhydroxy aldehydes or ketones, and the larger saccharides yield them on hydrolysis. Only simple monosaccharides such as glucose fit the formula CnH2nOn; sucrose, a disaccharide, is C12H22O11 because the glycosidic link removes one water.
