Aldoses

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000377

Monosaccharides, or polyhydroxy aldehydes, whose open-chain form carries an aldehyde group at one end of the carbon chain, as in glucose, ribose and glyceraldehyde. Every aldose with three or more carbons has at least one stereocentre. In water most molecules exist as cyclic hemiacetals, six-membered pyranose or five-membered furanose rings, in equilibrium with a small share of the open-chain form.
