Ketoses

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006328

A class of monosaccharides characterized by the presence of a ketone functional group. In their open-chain form, the carbonyl group is located at an internal carbon atom, not at the end of the chain. Ketoses with five or more carbon atoms exist predominantly as cyclic hemiacetals, formed by an intramolecular reaction between the ketone and a hydroxyl group.
