Ketosis

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006329

A metabolic state characterized by an elevated concentration of ketone bodies in the blood and urine, resulting from the breakdown of fats for energy. This process occurs when the body's glucose supply is insufficient, such as during fasting, prolonged exercise, or adherence to a very low-carbohydrate diet. Normal physiological ketosis typically involves blood ketone levels below 3 millimoles per liter.
