Ketone body
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006326
Organic compounds produced in the liver from fatty acids during periods of low carbohydrate intake, prolonged fasting, or uncontrolled diabetes. These molecules, primarily acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate, and acetone, serve as an alternative energy source for the brain and other tissues when glucose is scarce. Their concentration in the blood increases significantly during ketosis.
