Hemiketals

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005188

Organic compounds formed by the reversible reaction between a ketone and an alcohol, resulting in a molecule containing both a hydroxyl group and an alkoxy group attached to the same carbon atom. They are analogous to hemiacetals but are derived from ketones rather than aldehydes. Cyclic hemiketals are common in carbohydrate chemistry.
