Lactols
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006418
Cyclic hemiacetals or hemiketals formed by the intramolecular reaction of a hydroxyl group with an aldehyde or ketone group within the same molecule. They contain a cyclic ether ring with a hydroxyl group attached to the anomeric carbon. Lactols are common in carbohydrate chemistry, forming the cyclic structures of sugars.
