Macrolides

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006869

Compounds built on a large cyclic ester (lactone) whose ring has at least twelve atoms, in the antibiotic class usually carrying one or more deoxy sugars attached to the ring. Erythromycin has a 14-membered ring, azithromycin a 15-membered one and tylosin a 16-membered one, whereas methymycin has a 12-membered ring.
