Disaccharides

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003274

Carbohydrates formed when two monosaccharide units are joined together by a glycosidic bond, with the elimination of a water molecule. The linkage can be classified as α (alpha) or β (beta) depending on the stereochemistry at the anomeric carbon of the linking monosaccharide. Common examples include sucrose, which is composed of glucose and fructose, and lactose, which is composed of galactose and glucose.
