Disappearance cross section

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003275

The effective area per incident primary ion in static secondary ion mass spectrometry within which a surface species is damaged or removed, so that its characteristic secondary-ion signal is lost. The signal then falls exponentially with primary ion fluence. The value is of the order of 1 to 10 square nanometres for molecular ions, which sets the static limit of roughly 10 trillion primary ions per square centimetre.
