Scattering cross-section

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010563

A measure of the probability that an incident particle or photon will be scattered by a target particle or molecule. It represents an effective area that the target presents to the incident radiation for scattering to occur. This quantity has units of area, typically expressed in square meters or barns (1 barn = 10^-28 m^2).
