Scattering error
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010564
An error in spectrophotometric absorbance measurements in which particles, emulsions or micelles in the sample scatter part of the beam away from the detector, further attenuating the transmitted beam so that the measured absorbance is too high. It is most pronounced in turbid solutions or those with suspended solids. Because scattering grows toward shorter wavelengths, it appears as a baseline that rises toward the ultraviolet.
