Primary ion
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009430
An ion generated externally and directed at a sample surface to induce sputtering or ionization of the sample material. These ions transfer energy to the sample, causing atoms or molecules to be ejected as secondary ions or neutral species. Common primary ions include O2+, Cs+, and Ar+, used in techniques like secondary ion mass spectrometry.
