Probe ion

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009486

An ion directed at a sample surface to induce sputtering or ionization of the sample material for analysis. These ions transfer energy to the sample, causing atoms or molecules to be ejected as secondary ions or neutral species. Common probe ions include O2+, Cs+, and Ar+, used in techniques like secondary ion mass spectrometry.
