Liquid secondary ionization
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006684
A soft ionization technique used in mass spectrometry where a primary beam of high-energy ions bombards a sample dissolved in a low-volatility liquid matrix. This process sputters both matrix and analyte molecules into the gas phase, with ionization occurring through proton transfer reactions. Liquid secondary ionization is closely related to fast atom bombardment, but it uses a primary beam of ions, such as cesium ions (Cs+), instead of neutral atoms.
