Fast atom bombardment ionization
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004349
An ionization technique in mass spectrometry where a beam of high-energy neutral atoms, such as xenon or argon, bombards a sample dissolved in a non-volatile liquid matrix. This bombardment transfers energy to the matrix and analyte molecules, leading to the desorption and ionization of the analyte into the gas phase. It is particularly effective for analyzing polar, thermally labile, and high molecular weight compounds, often producing protonated or deprotonated molecular ions.
