Carbohydrate

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001629

  1. A biomolecule consisting of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms, usually with a hydrogen-to-oxygen atom ratio of 2:1, as in water. These compounds include sugars, starches, and cellulose, serving as primary energy sources and structural components in living organisms. Monosaccharides are the simplest form, such as glucose and fructose.

  2. A broad class of organic compounds composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, typically with a hydrogen to oxygen ratio of 2:1, as in water. They are polyhydroxy aldehydes or ketones, or substances that yield such compounds upon hydrolysis. Carbohydrates include sugars, starches, and cellulose, and are fundamental biomolecules serving as energy sources and structural components.
