Dextrans
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003115
Branched polysaccharides of D-glucose produced by bacteria such as Leuconostoc mesenteroides from sucrose, in which the glucose units are joined mainly by alpha-1,6 glycosidic bonds, with branches through alpha-1,2, alpha-1,3, or alpha-1,4 linkages. Dextran fractions are used as plasma volume expanders and, cross-linked, as Sephadex gel filtration media.
