Complement
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002312
A complex system of proteins in the immune system that enhances the ability of antibodies and phagocytic cells to clear microbes and damaged cells from an organism. It consists of over 30 proteins that act in a cascade, leading to inflammation, opsonization, and direct lysis of target cells. Activation of the complement system can be triggered by antibodies or directly by microbial surfaces.
