Host-vector system

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005403

A combination of a host organism and a vector, such as a plasmid or virus, used in genetic engineering to introduce and replicate foreign deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). The host provides the cellular machinery for replication and expression, while the vector carries the desired gene into the host. Common host organisms include bacteria like Escherichia coli, and vectors are often modified plasmids.
