Environmental transformation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003993

The process by which a chemical substance is structurally altered in the environment through biotic or abiotic mechanisms. Biotic transformation involves metabolic breakdown by microorganisms, plants, or animals, while abiotic transformation includes processes like hydrolysis, photolysis, and oxidation. The resulting transformation products may have different toxicity, persistence, and mobility characteristics than the parent compound.
