Abiotic
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012829
Describing a non-living chemical or physical factor in the environment, or a process that occurs without the involvement of living organisms. Abiotic transformation of a chemical, for instance, involves processes like hydrolysis or photolysis rather than metabolism by an organism. This distinction is central to environmental fate studies, which track how substances degrade and move through ecosystems.
