Carbonization

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001651

The thermochemical process of converting organic materials into carbon by heating them in an inert atmosphere, typically at temperatures between 400 and 1000 degrees Celsius. During this process, volatile components are driven off, leaving behind a carbon-rich solid residue. Carbonization is a fundamental step in the production of coke, charcoal, and carbon fibers.
