Decomposition

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002908

A change in which one phase separates into two or more new phases of differing composition, with chemical bonds broken along the way. A solid can break down into several solid phases or into a mixture of solid and fluid phases. Heating calcium carbonate gives solid calcium oxide and carbon dioxide gas, for instance, according to CaCO3 → CaO + CO2.
