Decompensation

The failure of an organ or system to maintain its normal physiological function, often following a period of compensation for an underlying stress or disease. This state indicates that the compensatory mechanisms are no longer sufficient to cope with the demands placed upon the system. It can manifest as a worsening of symptoms or the onset of new clinical signs.
