Pseudoadaptation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009627
An apparent adaptation of an organism to a changed environment, often a chemical stressor, in which the biochemical systems are in fact strained beyond the limits of normal homeostatic control. The organism looks adjusted, but a concealed pathology persists and can later appear as overt damage, a breakdown of compensation known as decompensation. It contrasts with genuine physiological adaptation, which stays within the homeostatic range and causes no lasting harm.
