Adaptation

A reversible adjustment in the physiological or biochemical state of an organism in response to environmental changes or exposure to a toxicant. This process allows the organism to better tolerate or survive the altered conditions. Adaptation can involve changes in enzyme levels, receptor expression, or metabolic pathways.
