General adaptation syndrome
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004819
A model describing the body's nonspecific physiological response to prolonged stress, first proposed by Hans Selye. It consists of three successive stages: an initial alarm reaction, a stage of resistance or adaptation, and a final stage of exhaustion if the stressor persists. The exhaustion stage is characterized by the depletion of energy reserves and a collapse of the body's ability to resist the stress, leading to illness or death.
