Homeostasis

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005348

The maintenance of a stable, constant internal environment within a living organism, counteracting external or internal disturbances through coordinated physiological processes. This self-regulating system relies on negative feedback loops to keep variables like body temperature, blood glucose, and pH within a narrow, predefined range conducive to optimal function. A failure in homeostatic mechanisms can lead to disease, while death represents a complete failure of homeostasis.
