Bioremediation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001318
A process that uses living organisms, such as microbes, fungi, or plants, to degrade or transform hazardous substances into less toxic or non-toxic forms. This waste management technique harnesses natural biological activities to clean up contaminated soil, water, or other environments. An example is the use of specific bacteria to break down petroleum hydrocarbons from an oil spill into carbon dioxide and water.
