Saprobic
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010515
Relating to an organism that derives its nourishment from nonliving or decaying organic matter. Saprobic fungi and bacteria are decomposers that break down complex organic materials, releasing inorganic nutrients back into the ecosystem. In aquatic environments, the abundance and type of saprobic organisms are used as bioindicators to assess the level of organic pollution in a body of water.
